Early Morning – Rialto markets
Watercolour
12cm x 16cm
Signed

The drizzly mists have just begun to lift from the city, already
the bulk of the day's trade in fish is over. The lady with the
trolley is making her way home behind the market stalls in an effort to avoid the press of early morning shoppers.
I hope I have made the pavement, slick with water and ice
from unloading the barges, just slippy enough.

Chioggia , Fishing Boats and nets
Watercolour
49cm x 35.5 cm
Signed

Chioggia is like Venice with it's overalls on, divided as it
seems between fishing and boat building, it has the buzz of industry about it. These lovely old boats and traditional nets
are used to fish the lagoon and provide Venice with the fresh
fish that is served in local homes, hotels and restaurants as
they have done for generations.
The drying nets, rickety frames and moorings, so obviously
made from anything that comes to hand provide a wonderful tangle that I find irresistible.

Rialto Markets at Night
Watercolour
48cm x 36cm
Signed

The Rialto markets are at the heart of Venice and all things Venetian, particularly early in the morning and in the evening.
The challenge here was to allow the artificial light both to reveal and unite the various aspects of the composition.
Watching the people, it is fascinating to imagine where they
have come from and where they are going, not to mention who
it is the ladies in the middle ground are talking about!

Gondola traffic Jam, Rio San Moise
Watercolour
25cm x 36 cm
Signed

The Rio San Moise has a taxi rank for gondolas.
The motorboat blocking their progress is causing much,
to say the least, verbal comment. The eye is lead towards the relative calm of the Grand Canal in the distance, implying an imminent resumption of the smooth flow of traffic.

Wrapper
Watercolour
53cm x 74cm
Signed

An observation of the way things are.The title of this
painting refers to the sweet wrapper casually discarded
and the larger wrapper, the surface of the earth.

Old Fergie
Watercolour
16.5cm x 26.5cm
Signed

I have a soft spot for these old tractors, they were so much part of the landscape of my youth. They look so right
on the land.
Now,  many of them seem to have become literally part
of the very landscape they helped to create.

Borrans Barn
Watercolour
19cm x 28cm
Signed

A good proportion of the history and geography of the
Lake District is visible from this area at the southern
edge of Ambleside. Some of which is portrayed in this relatively small work. As well as the ubiquitous sheep and
the fells they have helped to shape, to the right of the picture are the remains of the Roman fort of Galava.

Between Catches And Showers, Staithes
Watercolour
42.5 x 60
Signed

One of the most attractive of the fishing villages dotted
along the East coast of Yorkshire , Staithes' affinity with
and reliance upon the sea is apparent at every turn.
